NHS Coventry chooses Assura Coventry to provide services at homeless and refugee centres

NHS Coventry has selected Assura Coventry as the preferred bidder to provide health services at the city’s Anchor Centre on Stoney Stanton Road and the Meridian Practice on Bishop Street following a robust and competitive tendering process.

The Anchor Centre and Meridian Practice provide healthcare services, such as; access to GPs, stop smoking, sexual health and mental health services to homeless, Asylum Seekers and Refugee patients across the city.

Assura Coventry will take on the service from Coventry Community Health Services, to deliver health care for the homeless, refugees and asylum seekers. Assura Coventry is a partnership between eight local GP practices and leading health provider Assura Medical, which was set up to provide high quality care directly to NHS patients. It currently operates a number of services including: Coventry NHS Healthcare and Walk-in Centre at the new state-of-the-art City of Coventry Healthcare Centre.

Alison Walshe, Director of Commissioning Development at the Arden Cluster (known as NHS Warwickshire and NHS Coventry), said: “We’re delighted that Assura Coventry has been awarded the contract and we look forward to working with them in looking after the health of local people in Coventry.”

Dr Ian MacDonald, a local GP and chair of Assura Coventry, said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to provide for the health needs for patients who in many cases will have had varying access to high quality care and who have complex care needs. It is essential that these patients have a GP service which can understand and deal with their medical needs. We are committed to continue to provide these patients with high quality access, easy and convenient access to a GP or nurse when they need it.”

The new tender was awarded following a rigorous procurement process, triggered as a result of national guidance requiring that the PCT separate its provider services from commissioning earlier this year. This guidance enables the trust to focus on developing, buying and managing the performance of services, leaving the provider to concentrate on delivering the services and clinical practice.
