Local MP unveils new Sowerby Bridge surgery

Linda Riordan, MP for Halifax, dropped in to Allan House on Station Road, Sowerby Bridge today to officially open the Meadow Dale Group Practice.

Assisted by local residents, staff and doctors, Mrs Riordan MP unveiled a plaque before taking a tour of the new facility to learn first hand how the new surgery has been improving choice and access since it welcomed its first patients in November last year.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Riordan MP, said: “The Meadow Dale Group Practice, Sowerby Bridge is a much needed practice in the heart of the community. It’s an asset to the local community which has suffered in the past from a lack of local GP access.”

The Meadow Dale Group Practice, which also has a branch in Elland and Ovenden, is operated by Assura Leeds, a partnership between 26 GP practices and leading healthcare provider Assura Medical.

The practice is open to new patients and residents of Calderdale can register at any branch and access the other two whenever they like. All branches offer extended weekend and evening opening hours from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday and from 8am to 1pm on Saturday.

In addition to normal nurse and GP services and extended opening hours, all three practices offer advice and support on living a healthy lifestyle, contraception and substance misuse support.

Dr Ken McGechaen, a Leeds GP and chair of Assura Leeds, said: “I’d like to thank Mrs Riordan for helping us to celebrate the official opening of our Sowerby Bridge branch. Our extended evening and Saturday opening times have proved popular with patients, many of whom have now registered with us.

“If you register with our group practice in Sowerby Bridge, you can also use our other two practices in Elland and Ovenden. For example, if you live in Sowerby Bridge but work in Ovenden, you can go to either of those two or the one in Elland if it’s more convenient for you.”

Angela Monaghan, chair of NHS Calderdale, added: “We welcome the opening of this new practice and the increase in choice it will provide for patients locally. We are committed to continually improving primary care services across Calderdale, which we know will improve the health and wellbeing of people across the district.”

The new practice is part of a nationally funded programme to open five new practices in the borough. Calder Community Practice in Todmorden and Park Community Practice in West Central Halifax were opened as part of phase one of the programme in 2009.

In 2008 Calderdale was identified by the Department of Health as one of the ‘least well’ served districts for GPs in the country. During 2009 NHS Calderdale ran a large scale consultation called ‘Practice Plus’.

Over 2,000 residents took part and their feedback was included in the design of the service. Assura Leeds LLP was appointed as the new provider by NHS Calderdale following an open competition.
