North East Lincolnshire Dermatology Service in line for BMJ award
The awards are open to clinically led teams based in the UK with projects active in 2018.
The team applied for the award in recognition of their teledermatology service which is helping ensure that their service users feel the difference and have been shortlisted in the Dermatology category for The BMJ (British Medical Journal) Awards 2019.
More than 1,400 people were waiting for a dermatology appointment in North East Lincolnshire (NE Lincs) when we began providing the service in April 2017. Of these, 328 (23%) were beyond the maximum 18-week threshold.
The situation reflected a national issue which was due to a shortfall in dermatologists, inefficient pathways and a lack of dermatology education for GPs leading to unnecessary referrals.
The teledermatology solution has significantly improved access to dermatology services for patients in North and North East Lincolnshire ensuring care is provided in the ‘right place at the right time’.
The service now has 20,000 service user contacts a year:
- 40% of referrals now come via the teledermatology system – 908 patients benefitted in 2017/18 and 1044 from April to November 2018
- Waiting times in NE Lincs down to two weeks for urgent cases and four weeks for routine within the first six months of the project and sustained
- 99% of potential cancer cases are seen within two weeks, versus 93% nationally
Dr Javed Mohungoo National Clinical Lead for Dermatology and Chair for the for the Dermatology Striving for Better Network said: ‘I am have been very proud of the achievement of our Dermatology Team and being shortlisted for Dermatology Team of the Year is recognition of all our passion and hard work’.
The team have been invited to deliver a presentation on their entry on 24 April at BMA House in London in front of a panel of three expert judges and will also be featured in a BMJ article online and in print.
The impact our teledermatology service is having in the service is clear, we have managed to create an effective and value for money solution to a widespread problem and we hope the judges agree!
Congratulations to the team on making the shortlist and the best of luck on 24 April!
