Service user impressed by Bath’s Home First service after accessing support

While still receiving care at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath, a service user was able to access support to help him return home sooner than he thought was possible to be with his family and receive the care and support needed in the comfort of his own home.

HomeFirstJohn Over, pictured, learned about the Home First service when a member of the dedicated team visited him to tell him he no longer needed hospital care. The team worked with him to get him home within 24 hours of being referred to the service.

Healthcare professionals reviewed the support John needed, made any arrangements and provided regular support to help him remain independent in his own home and recover faster in a place that is familiar to him.

“On the day that I returned home from hospital a physiotherapist and occupational therapist visited to assess what extra assistance might be needed,” John said. “They were professional, courteous and all of the additional equipment needed was in my home by the end of the day.

“Visits from a district nurse were also organised on that first day. I was very impressed. The service was rather like a one stop shop, with the team able to assess and organise all of the services that they felt I would need.”

In the service’s first year alone, it has helped more than 2,000 patients like John return home sooner with the right support in place.

Home First is a partnership of organisations that includes Virgin Care, the RUH, Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Health & Care, Medvivo, Age UK Bath, Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Somerset County Council.

“I had no idea how good the service was going to be. I cannot speak highly enough of the whole team, who were competent, caring, compassionate and professional,” added John. “They put me and my family all at ease and, at a time when my health was still fragile, made it possible for me to receive convalescent care and support in my own home.”
