What’s your role at Virgin Care?
I am the Lead for Smoking Cessation within the Healthy Lifestyle Service (wellness service) in Bath & North East Somerset. I also manage the Somer Valley locality team.
How did you join?
I transferred from another provider in April 2017.
What’s your professional background?
My background is in dentistry. I worked as a Practice Manager for many years. I completed a post-certificate dental nurse training course in Oral Hygiene and that led to me a course in smoking cessation. I have worked in the field of smoking cessation for over ten years and love the work I do. I have trained extensively in smoking cessation.
What’s your role in the Healthy Lifestyle Service?
I work closely with a team of health improvement practitioners to support smokers and vapers who wish to quit or cut down their smoking/vaping. I deliver training to nurses and other health professionals in smoking cessation. It’s important for me to keep smoking on the health agenda as it’s still the largest cause of premature death in the UK today. I still support service users who wish to quit/cut down. It’s a pleasure to support people though such a life changing event.
What are you working on at the moment to help everyone feel the difference?
At the moment I am supporting Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust to become smokefree and on supporting the organisations involved in the STP to become smokefree. This entails making sure policies and procedures are in place so that service users admitted to hospital can get the most suitable support they need. I also still run drop-ins and clinics for smokers/vapers.
What’s the most challenging part of your role?
The most challenging part of my role is engaging with other health professionals to remind them of the importance of raising the subject of smoking with their patients.
How have you felt the difference since you joined?
Transferring to Virgin Care has not been easy at times due to some IT issues. I really enjoy being part of a larger organisation and of course I love my TRIBE card! Everyone I speak to is professional and helpful and I know that Virgin Care really want to listen to patients and colleagues and provide a good service.
