Welcome to B&NES Food and Health Courses for Families

This is a Healthy Lifestyle Service programme of courses that work with parents and carers to improve the diet of children and young people up to the age of 17 years old.

Who is this service for?

Our service works with families who live or work in Bath and North East Somerset  or are registered with a GP in the area.

Cook It offers a range of free practical cookery courses for families/ carers to children under the age of 18, which includes pregnant women & their partners, course are run for either adults or adults with their child/ren. Adult courses are also open to pregnant women and their partners.

HENRY (Healthy Start, Brighter future) is for parents/carers/grandparents of children aged 0-5, this service is also open to pregnant women and their partners.

How does this service work / what’s involved in this service?

Cook It

A 5 week practical cookery course for adults who are parents/ carers of children. Each session is 2 hours long and you work as a group to cook simple, healthy low cost family meals. We also discuss topics such as food hygiene, the Eatwell guide, food labels and budgeting with lots of chances to share tips and ideas. All ingredients, equipment and recipes are provided free of charge and each week you  take home your cooking for your family to try.

These  run in childrens centres or community venues across B&NES and often run with a children’s group alongside to ensure you have childcare to enable you to attend.

Family Cook It

This is a practical cooking course for parents/ carers and their children. Over the course of 5 weeks you and your family will work as a team to cook deliciously simple, low cost, family food. We provide all the ingredients and equipment and you even get to take the food home each week to share with your family. These session usually run after school, during the school holidays or at the weekends, they are held in a range of schools and community venues.

HENRY – Health Start, Brighter future

A 9 week course for parents/carers of babies and young children aged 0-5. The HENRY programme is free to join and helps give your child the best possible start in life.

Each week helps you provide a healthy, happy, supportive environment for the whole family and  it covers 5 keys areas;

  • Parenting confidence
  • Physical activity for little one
  • What children and families eat
  • Family lifestyle habits
  • Enjoying life as a family

All parents who attend this course are invited to join a Cook it Course on completion.

For parents who need child care, we may be able to provide children’s groups. Our courses are run at Children’s Centres and community venues at different times of the day. For more information speak to your Health Visitor or Children’s Centre staff.
