We  offer consultation & support to foster carers and therapy to young people who are in care to Devon County Council.

We support children, young people and their families and carers by providing a specialist mental health service to the systems around them so that together, we can promote and support placement stability. We believe that children and young people in foster care should develop to their fullest social and personal potential.

Where do I go for my child’s appointment?

After we have received confirmation that you wish to take up an initial meeting with us, we will contact you and agree the place and time of your child’s appointment. If you need to bring any other children with you, please arrange for someone to supervise them during the appointment.

What happens during my child’s appointment?

Depending on your child’s needs, what happens in the appointment may vary. First appointments usually last between one and one and a half hours. We aim to get a good understanding of the current difficulties and how they have developed over time. We may also meet with parents or carers, children and young people separately or together as we want to understand the difficulties from everyone’s point of view.

How long will the appointment take?

Each appointment is dependent on your child’s needs so appointment times will vary, however, most tend to be about one hour long.

Bringing someone with you to your child’s appointment

You are welcome to bring someone with you to your child’s appointment. Sometimes our staff may also request to have someone present for an appointment. If you or the member of staff is uncomfortable with the person, we’ll reschedule to a later date when the correct person is available

How do I cancel or change my child’s appointment?

If you and your child cannot make the appointment, please contact us as soon as you can. This will enable us to use the time to arrange an appointment for another child.

How does the service work?

Children and young people are referred into our service by their social worker, fostering team or another member of children’s integrated services.

We will plan the way we can best help together with you and the other professionals or people involved with you. This might involve offering services from different team members or specialists according to the difficulty or help needed.

How soon will my child be seen?

Our target is to see children as soon as possible following notification from the referring professional. While we can’t be specific in this guide, we will contact you to discuss when we can see your child.

How will I get feedback about my child?

You will receive a copy of the record of appointments and the plans we agreed together.

Who will treat my child?

Our team is dedicated to providing every child with the best care we can and every clinician has undertaken specific training. There are different types of staff in our team including doctors, nurses, psychologists, primary mental health workers and family therapists. When your first appointment is arranged, you can ask who will be seeing you and what their job is.

Every member of our team has to provide evidence of their registration, training and criminal records status before they can work with children.

How will you help?

We will discuss the best way to help with the current difficulties when we meet with you.

However, some ways that we might provide help include:

  • Direct assessment of children and young people and the systems around them in relation to any risks, emotional, behavioural or mental health difficulties they might be experiencing
  • Supporting and close working with foster carers offering strategies, support and guidance through psycho education, therapeutic support and training on an individual and group basis
  • Consultation, supervision, support, guidance and training offered to the professional agencies around the child and young person and
  • Supervision and consultation to staff in residential local authority children’s homes
