Virgin Care scoops award at Student Nursing Times Awards

The Prison Healthcare Team at HMP Coldingley in Surrey has won the Student Nursing Times Award in the category of Placement of the Year: Community, 2017. The Virgin Care team beat off stiff competition from nominees from Yorkshire, Oxford, Derby and Bradford.

The Student NTAs which this year took place on 27 April at the London Hilton, celebrate the very best in student nurses and nurse education.

The award for Placement of the Year is testament to the validation of the students which they fed back through their placement evaluations at Coldingley but also from particular recognition of the team by Dr Allison Wiseman, Senior Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey.

Dr Wiseman supported the nomination, highlighting the team’s talent for “providing a safe and effective student placement” and noting them to be “excellent professional role models” always “putting the client and the student at the centre of care and learning”.

Congratulations to the Coldingley Healthcare Team and Mary Kelly, Learning Environment Lead who, jointly with Dr Wiseman, put the team forward for the award and collected it on the night (pictured centre).

Jacqui Smart, Head of Virgin Care’s Learning Enterprise, said: “I am absolutely delighted with this award, as our team work diligently to provide the best student experience we can.”

Jenni Middleton, editor of Nursing Times, (pictured to the right of Mary), said: “The Student Nursing Times Awards are always very special. Every year I am impressed by the standard of the students who enter – they demonstrate all the hard work, intelligence, enthusiasm, passion and skill we want to see in our future workforce. Of course, they could not do that without the support of their mentors on placement and university staff, which is why we are so pleased to be able to honour those individuals and institutions in these awards too. We are extremely proud of all our finalists and winners. Congratulations to them all.”
